2019 Osoyoos Flag Race

The last KRD race before Covid19 hit.  This festival was open to the whole club, with the competitive teams getting first choice.  It was a great venue in a beautiful setting. Wine was tasting set up on the beach the night before with a number of great Okanagan Wineries participating and the weather was perfect.

The flag race is a fun, though competitive race that ended up being a great time for an end of season festival. This link will take you to an article by Vanessa Broadbent of the Osoyoos Times and has a very good explanation of exactly what a ‘Flag Race’ is.  https://www.timeschronicle.ca/dragon-boaters-second-festival-pulls-in-twice-as-many-teams/

At the end of the race day an Alberta mixed Rep team – under 25, made a challenge to race across the lake and back (est. 2km) Stepping up to the challenge was a myriad of paddlers from different teams including a few KRD keeners. Being granted a 1minute start; they were off!  It was a hard 10 minute paddle and the Alberta team won but it was a good end to a very fun day.

Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY)

2023 saw KRD participating in the ‘Coldest Night’ for the 9th year in a row.  It is estimated that we have contributed $15K+ towards this initiative spearheaded by the Nelson Cares Society who preserves and maintains affordable housing in Nelson*. Coldest Night is a form of a Walk-A-Thon and KRD walking teams consist of 7-15 walkers who are sponsored by fellow club members, friends and relatives. Typically, the team walks a designated route of 5 km. Adorable toques are given to registered walkers (not donors) who raise a minimum of $150 ($75 for children).

*The first three CNOY walks targeted the refurbishment of Nelson Cares downtown affordable housing building, Ward Street Place. In the past 6 years the funding focus shifted to residents within the building through their Ready For Home Program that supports homeless individuals ready for housing, newly housed and those at risk of losing their housing.

2023 Polkadot Dragon Lantern Festival

Our Club participated in the 2023 Polkadot Dragon Lantern Festival in out beautiful little city of Nelson BC this February.  How could we not?! The “Dragon ladies” carried the large Dragon Puppet, following the Samba band in good festive spirit.  But not until we had built a Dragon nursery for our lady “Puff” who allows us to paddle her around our lake in the summer months.  A very magical evening of performance and stunning installations that was a wonderful gift of light in our Canadian winter.  Congratulations to the Festival organizers – a job well done!

Terry Fox Run

Every September the Kootenay Rhythm Dragons (KRD) invite and encourage the people of Nelson and area – individuals, groups, business’s and families – to join them in the annual Nelson Terry Fox Run.

The Run, is a Canadian tradition, which began in 1980 and embodies KRD’s mission to raise awareness of all cancers, and our vision of promoting empowerment, optimum health and well-being, and enrichment of our community.

On the third Sunday of September, each year, early in the morning at Lakeside Park, about 30 KRD paddlers volunteer to set up, assist participants to register, sign a dedication and enjoy visiting around the coffee table. Once the exciting warm-up, led by our well-known fellow paddler Puleng, is over, the horn sounds and everyone either walks, runs, cycles, or rollerblades along the 2.5 km. lakeshore route that starts and ends in Lakeside Park.

The Kootenay Rhythm Dragon committee works in close coordination with the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute to promote this legacy with the aim of one day stopping the suffering and finding a cure for cancers in people of all ages. Donations received aid in innovative research that leads to successful treatment of cancer. Over the past decade, the KRD has helped to raise from $6000 to $16,000 each year.
